Extending Stories

One of my favorite post reading activities I tried this year was having students write a "sequel" to our book.  I was surprised with two things: First, they were super excited not only to write and illustrate their sequels, but also to read them to the class. Second, it started a huge trend of students going home and writing their own books and bringing them to school, excited to share.  Definitely adding this to my rotation of extension activities.

Below are some of their books they created at home, just for fun.  It wasn't an assignment: they were inspired. 😍

Sticker Writing

I use this simple writing center for early finishers at literacy groups.  Kids love stickers and the circular sticker packs are relatively inexpensive. I have the kids sign their initials on a sign in sheet each week to make sure they don't go too crazy and do four every day!  When I first rolled it out, I thought an example and talking about it was enough.  My kindergartners didn't understand how to just write describing words with the noun and tried to squeeze in a whole sentence.  To help, we made an anchor chart of simple describing word categories like size, taste, feel, etc.   It's one of their favorite writing centers.
